Executive Elections

As you might be aware, every year we elect a new executive to lead the club for the upcoming school year. Every year, all positions are up for grabs and anyone can run for any position. We encourage everyone to run to become a club executive as it brings with it valuable experience in dealing with club members, the university community, and the AMS.

January 27th: Darkroom Sepia Toning and Digital Black and White Conversion

The next workshop will be held on January 27th at 6:30 pm in the clubroom. We will have two workshops going on concurrently. For the darkroom folks, we will have a printing party and teach you how to sepia tone prints (resin-coated or ‘RC’ paper only). You can bring negatives to make prints, and then tone right away, or you can bring in a print that you have and would like to tone. We will provide photo paper for the printing party.

For the digital folks, we will run a short tutorial in the studio on how to convert colour photographs into black and white using Adobe Photoshop.

February 3rd: Digital Presence: Presenting and Showcasing Your Work Online

Social networking and an online presence has opened a world of opportunities for photographers to share their work and collaborate with each other. In this workshop you will learn some neat tricks on how to present your photos online, as well as learning the basics of creating an online portfolio for your photography. If you wish to follow along and get started building your online presence please bring a laptop and some digital photos, or just come by and learn how you can begin sharing your work with the world.

February 10th: Extreme Sports Photography Workshop: Longboarding (Early sign up required)
or E6 (slide) processing (35 mm only)

The UBC Longboard club has agreed to collaborate with us on the evening of February 10 to take photos of longboarding. We will be taking the strobist kit out and teaching you how to take off camera flash exposures of longboarding. Meet at the club room at 6:30 pm and we will go over use of the strobist kit, then go en route to the shooting location!

Also, the UBC Longboard club has graciously offered to rent out their longboards to anyone who wants to try!

So come join us for some extreme sports and photography. We would like to limit this workshop to 10 people to give them maximum shooting time, space, and instruction time, so please sign up on the sheet in the clubroom. On the same sign up sheet, please indicate if you would like a free Longboard rental as well. (If you decide to rent, come prepared. Please bring a helmet and gloves at the very least).

Hey! For everyone that has not been getting e-mail for any reason, here is a copy of the latest e-mail newsletter sent out to all members. If you would like to have your name added to the e-mail list, please e-mail us at info@ubcphotosoc.com.

GALLERY SHOW – Call for Work

We’ve got the AMS Art Gallery in the SUB booked for a show from January 17 – January 21. What we need from you are pictures to fill the walls! Drop them off during office hours or at Thursday’s workshop.

Here are the details:

- We would like as many members as possible to submit at least one image and up to five images.
- Prints must ready to hang and in by Friday, January 14
- Prints can be any size larger than 4″x6″
- Images need to be titled (we will make up tags)
- e-submissions are not necessary, just drop off your prints during office hours or Thursday’s workshop
- There is not a show theme, the unifying concept and show title is “Becoming Photographers”
- Framing is completely optional
- Images will not be vetted by the Executive committee, but we do reserve the right to refuse objectionable images.
- You can include an artist’s statement explaining the concept behind images or technical info if you like, (max card size 4×6″)
- Photosoc’s frames (10 – 8×10″ and 4 – 13×19″) will be available for use during the gallery show on a first-come-first-served basis.
- We will supply inkjet photo paper and B&W darkroom paper during office hours and at the Thursday night workshop (Jan 13) for making gallery show prints.

If you have any questions, please email us. All photographers that submit a print to the gallery show will be entered into a draw for photography-related prizes. The draw will take place at the gallery reception.

—-

GALLERY SHOW – Reception

We will be hosting a free reception in the AMS Gallery on Tuesday, January 18, at 6:30 pm. Come out and see the show, meet some of the photographers, eat some snacks and listen to some music. Bring your friends and show off your work! There will be free light refreshments, and the photographer’s draw for prizes!

—-

GALLERY SHOW – Attendants

For the gallery show, we need volunteers to sit in the Gallery when it is open (between 10 am and 4 pm from Monday the 17th to Friday the 21st). The sign up sheet is posted in the clubroom. If you can volunteer an hour or two, please drop by the clubroom and sign up for a block. It is a great place to sit and chat with friends or do homework while helping us out.

—

Office Hours for Term 2:

Here are the office hours for Term 2. Drop by if you have any questions or want to borrow equipment.

Thursday Workshop – January 13, 6:30 pm – Displaying your Work

Thursday’s workshop will be focused on getting ready for the Gallery Show. We’ll have paper for the inkjet printer and darkroom paper out for you to print your images. Rob Fougere is going to talk about, and demo, some different methods of getting images ready to display, including matting and framing, mounting, and specialty items to promote archival and aesthetically-pleasing presentation. If you bring your own print and frame, we will have some mat board available for you to mat and frame, or mount your photos for the Gallery Show.

—

Housekeeping

Evan has resigned as Studio Manager. Please send studio booking requests to studio@ubcphotosoc.com. The studio lock box combination has changed from last term. If you plan to use the studio, please ask for the new code beforehand to prevent last minute frustration.

For the darkroom users, please remember to turn off the power supply to your enlarger and the timer box once you are finished printing. Also, we have been leaving the exhaust fan on to prevent the darkroom from becoming too warm, so until further notice, please leave the fan on.

—

Let’s have a great, photography-filled Term 2!

Cheers,
The Photosoc Execs
